Ye Funa is a young contemporary Chinese artist of videos, installations, and photographic works. Her work is politically charged, subtly engaged in pastiche as a satirizing style of propaganda. As a post-80s youth living in contemporary Chinese society, she investigates through her works the slowly disappearing values of the family, society, and her country, under the constant bombardment of the media, advertisements, and the growing trend of globalisation.
Ye Funa’s artwork is mainly based on the relationship between the realities of everyday life, the perceived connection between, authority and many areas of social life such as industrial and agricultural spaces, as well as different ethnic groups, and the fictional space of propaganda for the concept of “perfection” in an ideological system and a utopian landscape.
As a second generation artist, Ye Funa’s creativity is surprisingly independent. She does not seem to carry the baggage of having the need to surpass the success of her older generation. Having graduated from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and then obtaining an MFA from London’s Central St Martin’s College of Art, she is currently a full-time artist and also teaching in the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing. This background and her upbringing has given Ye Funa the best training and unlimited creative freedom.
