Contemporary by Angela Li will be participating in Art Basel Hong Kong from March 28th to 30th. The Insights Sector area (Booth #3C46) "Old Landscape" will unveil Yuk-Keung Kurt Chan 's latest acrylic and ink paintings and mixed media works, with the artist present.
In Chan’s solo project “Old Landscape”, he draws inspiration from the famous Miller-Urey Experiment of 1952, which simulated early Earth conditions conducive to the emergence of life, this project re-evaluates the concept of the Traditional Chinese Landscape through a scientific perspective. By reinterpreting the rocks, trees, and water—integral components of Chinese landscape painting—as analogous to the fundamental elements of the Miller-Urey Experiment, the works presented aim to forge a novel approach to perceiving landscape as an art genre.
Electricity, water, and minerals are three fundamental elements that make life possible on Earth. Lightning stands out as a captivating phenomenon, symbolizing the primal energy trajectory. It bears a striking resemblance to the shapes and patterns of trees, nerves, and blood vessels observed in daily life.
As a mixed media artist profoundly influenced by Chinese Art, Chan will employ various art forms—including calligraphy, painting, sculpture, and found objects—to explore themes related to early landscapes. The exhibition will feature semi-abstract paintings inspired by wild nature and sculpture constructed with petrified wood with steel frame and wheel to illustrate the profound transformation of materials over time, highlighting the essential elements of landscape painting.
