Asian Art News features Exhibition – Once Upon a Time. Over the past few months, rather than featuring one-person exhibitions, gallery director Angela Li and Chinese curator Fang Lei have together organized a number of thoughtful group shows covering everything from art inspired by traditional painting to printmaking. The most recent, entitled Once Upon A Time…, features photography and video from six well-known Chinese artists for whom the past decade has perhaps been the most successful of their careers. New Media is not to everyone’s liking, but there are many fresh and unique voices that have utilized the potential of new media to articulate singularly serious and hold artistic, political, social, and cultural declarations. They approached the new quotidian Chinese reality with a lyrical quality that surprises and subverts and notion of a uniform Chinese culture or a culture that remains isolated from the rest of the world in any way.
